Tour companies that are based within your intended destination country are more likely to be well versed with your particular interests.
Size of Company: Small tour companies tend to be more personal and more flexible in thier planning. Smaller companies are best suited for individual, family and small-group travel.
Choice of Accomodation
Camping: Suited for low-budget travellers and adventure safaris. They are the least costly and offer the lowest levels of luxury.
Tented Camp: Semi-permanent camps set up in the same location. Usually located in wildlife conservation areas or ranches. These usually offer a medium to high level of luxury and tend to be a little expensive. Suited for honeymoon safaris, family vacations and Wildlife experience safaris.
Smaller Camps/Lodges: Permanent lodges built up in wildlife conservation areas or ranches. Usually managed by owners or community groups. Though they are usually more expensive, they offer higher levels of luxury, cultural/wildlife experience and contribute directly to conservation, community development and ecotourism.
Choice of Itineray
Have the tour consultant go over the intended itineray (travel plan) to make sure that it shall cover your interests e.g. wildlife, culture, beach, natural history etc.
Choice of Guide
You should insist on a local guide, preferably from the local community. They are more knowledgeable and can make your visit with the local community more interactive.
